		<description><![CDATA[A new age of vision is upon us. A revolution within the field of glass will provide limitless ideas for our eyes, cars and planes.]]></description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Glasses, or spectacles as I like to refer to them, have not changed much since they were invented many centuries ago.  One of the few big changes to glasses came in the year 1784.  This change was brought about by one of the founding fathers of the USA, Benjamin Franklin.  Ben Franklin suffered from both myopia and presbyopia, which meant he had problems viewing distant objects as well as very near ones.  He would normally be forced to switch between two different pairs of glasses in order to be able to see properly.  Wanting to alleviate this nuisance, he invented bifocal glasses.  These allowed him to be able to view things both near and far without the need to switch between two different pairs of glasses.  The other change is much more recent.  This happened when contact lenses were invented.  Contact lenses provided convenience and an attractive look without the need for clunky frames.  Aside from these two changes, all other ones have been minuscule in comparison.  These involve things like tinted lenses, a variety of styles, colored contact lenses and safety glasses.</p>
<p>Glasses are finally receiving more attention than ever and this could provide amazing results for the general populous.  The field of nanotechnology can find applications almost anywhere considering the scale on which they exist (1 meter = 1 billion nanometers).  Some of these new applications are being applied to a variety of materials, one of which includes glasses.  No longer will people be restricted by a physical set of glasses which is immutable.  Nanocircuits work at the quantum level and can also modify the effects of certain materials that they are built on.  PixelOptics, a US company, has invented a new type of eye-wear which could make the bifocal obsolete.  They created a pair of glasses that uses a nanocircuit in order to change the focus of the glasses.  The glasses contain an electro-active liquid crystal layer which has a variable index of refraction depending on the amount of electricity passing through it.</p>
<p>The glasses will have three different modes of operation.  Automatic, manual, and off.  The automatic setting will cause the glasses to focus differently depending on the users movements.  It will try and accommodate the user by changing focus as the user looks at something else.  Manual mode will allow the user to see things from a distance normally, but will also allow people that are near-sighted to look down and read something without a problem.  The last mode, which turns the electro-active liquid crystal layer off, will make the glasses act like the glasses we wear today, which is useful for general activities like walking.  But this is only the beginning of what is to come in the future.</p>
<div id="attachment_5408" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 310px"><a href="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/830912.jpg" rel="lightbox[5350]" title="Electronic Spectacles"><img class="size-medium wp-image-5408" src="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/830912-300x268.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="268" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Circuit Diagram on a Contact Lens</p></div>
<div id="attachment_5409" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 310px"><img class="size-medium wp-image-5409" src="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/BionicEye-300x235.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="235" /><p class="wp-caption-text">Bionic Eye</p></div>
<p style="text-align: center">
<p>The ability to add circuitry within glasses (or any glass, for that matter) will lead to more innovation and great new ideas.  Some of these ideas have already been produced even though the technology has not been applied to consumer products.  Most of these ideas came to fruition because of one thing; the HUD.  HUD&#8217;s, or Heads-up Display&#8217;s, originated from aircraft.  Flying an airplane is no simple task.  There are always many things to be aware of at all times, aside from watching where you&#8217;re flying.  For this reason, HUD&#8217;s were implemented within airplanes in order to allow pilots to know exactly what is going on.  Some of the info that is displayed includes, but is not limited to, speed, direction, latitude and weapons status.  These types of displays have been around for decades, but have mostly been used in airplanes, and within a few select automobiles.  Now they are being applied to glasses and contact lenses.</p>
<div id="attachment_5438" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 310px"><img class="size-medium wp-image-5438" src="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/hud-sample-300x180.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="180" /><p class="wp-caption-text">General Aircraft HUD</p></div>
<div id="attachment_5410" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 310px"><img class="size-medium wp-image-5410" src="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/contactlensescreen-300x295.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="295" /><p class="wp-caption-text">Nanocircuit on a Contact Lens</p></div>
<p>Here is what our car windshield&#8217;s could look like (a bit over-exaggerated, but shows what is possible).</p>
<p style="text-align: center"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-5439" src="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/found.jpg" alt="" width="560" height="665" /></p>
<p style="text-align: left">A more realistic approach:</p>
<p style="text-align: left"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-5447" src="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/augmented-reality-hud.jpg" alt="" width="400" height="300" /></p>
<p style="text-align: left">There are honestly limitless possible applications for such devices.  Just a few awesome ideas:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Object recognition</strong>: Recognizing buildings, roads, people, even hazards that could potentially be dangerous.  It would highlight these areas and label them in an easily viewable manner.</li>
<li><strong>Orientation</strong>: Position tracking, letting you know exactly where you are and where you are going, as well as how fast you are moving.</li>
<li><strong>Sight Augmentation</strong>: It may be hard for us to see at night, but not for our technology.  It can improve the image and modify it in many ways to make it clearly visible for the user, which would not only be helpful at night, but also in other situations like during a rain or snow storm.</li>
<li><strong>Zoom!</strong>: Something too far in the distance to see?  Why not zoom in on it and get a closer look.</li>
<li><strong>Visible Light Spectrum</strong>: We would no longer be restricted to only viewing things within our visible light spectrum.  It may be possible to view things using the infrared or ultraviolet spectrum.</li>
<li><strong>Real Time Info</strong>: Don&#8217;t recognize something?  The circuit could be built with a database of objects, peoples, places and tell you anything you&#8217;d like to know about them, including things like material composition, distance from user and any common labels associated with it.</li>
<li><strong>Self Diagnosis</strong>: Tracking heart rate, cholesterol, sodium, potassium, and anything else that may be linked with someones health.</li>
</ul>
<p>As this technology progresses, it will undoubtedly unfold in many different ways.  I personally can&#8217;t wait for something like this to become mainstream and consumer ready.</p>

		<description><![CDATA[<!--:en-->This is you. When you can't be somewhere this will take your stead, with you manning the controls. All I can think of are the plethora of pranks that this poor avatar-bot will endure...<!--:-->]]></description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><!--:en--><a href="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/KX3Q4306.jpg" rel="lightbox[3771]" title="<!--:en-->Avatar of present day is no blue kitty cat<!--:-->&#8220;><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3775" src="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/KX3Q4306.jpg" alt="" width="347" height="520" /></a></p>
<p>The bot is called QB, and it&#8217;s the new technological replacement for your biologically hung-over ass.  Imagine, you wake up and decide you&#8217;d rather not touch the floor at all that day. You reach for your laptop and log-in to QB. You&#8217;re able to navigate the office, talk to people, and keep tabs on everything you normally would&#8230; all from the warm duvet comfort of your bed. Nice.</p>
<p>Similar to a Segway, this little buddy has two motorized wheels but also boasts a camera, microphone, speaker, display LCD screen, laser pointer, and a automatically retracting boom. You have everything you need to be there&#8230;without having to actually be there. Freaky!  Is it just me? Because I can imagine this thing coming by my desk and leaning forward to see what I&#8217;m doing. Like a boss with his hands behind his back, doing the little &#8230;. &#8220;hows everything going today?&#8221;.  I know if I had one, I&#8217;d print a giant picture of my face and stick it to its &#8220;head&#8221;.  That would be slick. I would also mod a fog horn, USB missile launcher, and water gun to it. I will call it: QB &#8211; Office Mech.</p>
<p><a href="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/anybots_main-thumb-550x733-39013.jpg" rel="lightbox[3771]" title="<!--:en-->Avatar of present day is no blue kitty cat<!--:-->&#8220;><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3776" src="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/anybots_main-thumb-550x733-39013.jpg" alt="" width="350" height="467" /></a></p>
<p>Oh I can&#8217;t wait, maybe in a couple years I&#8217;ll be able to post youtube vids of QB pranks. Oh, the possibilities! The endless pranking possibilities!</p>
<blockquote><p><strong>&#8221; </strong>QB looks kind of like a Segway, with a pair of <a href="http://dvice.com/archives/2009/11/army-mapping-dr.php">LIDAR</a>-guided wheels and a 5-megapixel camera up top on the &#8220;boom,&#8221; which extends up about five to six feet (it can be adjusted shorter). There&#8217;s also a small screen at the &#8220;head&#8221; that can show a webcam view of the user (or just an icon or photo). Communication and control are done over Wi-Fi.</p>
<p>The robot avatar isn&#8217;t actually meant to replace videoconferencing, but the idea is to be able to participate in more than just meetings. With QB, you can observe a workplace, participate more directly in tasks, or just be there for those casual conversations — all from thousands of miles away. At least in theory. <strong>&#8220;</strong></p></blockquote>

<p>Here&#8217;s what the Software looks like (the echo is from the computer to QB communication):</p>

<p><strong>Here&#8217;s Richard Hammond&#8217;s QB</strong><br />

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><!--:en--><a href="http://nation.towergaming.com/2010/05/inside-darpa-20-advanced-technology-projects-pt-1-of-4/">In last week&#8217;s edition of &#8220;Inside DARPA&#8221;</a> we learned about crazy ChemBots, Accelerated learning, Polymer Ice, and a bunch of other crazy shit DARPA is coming up with. Again, this is just the stuff that we KNOW ABOUT ! I can only imagine the crazy awesome things they&#8217;re secretly making!</p>
<h3>Self Decontaminating Surface</h3>
<p><a href="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/sds-logo.jpg" rel="lightbox[3671]" title="<!--:en-->Inside DARPA: 20 Advanced Technology Projects. – Pt 2 of 4<!--:-->&#8220;><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3673" src="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/sds-logo.jpg" alt="" width="150" height="75" /></a></p>
<p>So your battalion is in the Middle East pushing the enemy back when all-of-a-sudden some asshole decides to use a deadly chemical agent to bomb the crap out of you and your men. Not only is this attack ruining your allotted tan time, but now all your men are contaminated with hazardous &#8220;stuff&#8221;.</p>
<p>Good thing the friendly private contractors of DARPA have nearly perfected Self Decontaminating Surfaces. From infrastructure like tents, brick and mortar, and sand bag bunkers to random objects like your gun, electronics, and clothing, all your inanimate objects will clean themselves!</p>
<p>Nano-technology is really cool and scary all at the same time. At least now you can tan in peace knowing that any fallout will be magically scrubbed away by your little US funded nano-buddies (just cover your skin up when you tan, okay?).</p>
<p><a href="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/delf-cleaning.jpg" rel="lightbox[3671]" title="<!--:en-->Inside DARPA: 20 Advanced Technology Projects. – Pt 2 of 4<!--:-->&#8220;><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3672" src="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/delf-cleaning.jpg" alt="" width="491" height="344" /></a></p>
<h3>Structural Amorphous Metals<br />
<a href="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/sam-logo.jpg" rel="lightbox[3671]" title="<!--:en-->Inside DARPA: 20 Advanced Technology Projects. – Pt 2 of 4<!--:-->&#8220;><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3677" src="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/sam-logo.jpg" alt="" width="121" height="157" /></a></h3>
<p>Aluminum alloy? So 1990&#8242;s.  Titanium alloy? Pul-lease!  Adamantium? Fictitiously obsolete.  If you&#8217;re not an amorphous metal, you&#8217;re just another one of those &#8220;ium&#8221; metal-alloys of the old-school.</p>
<p>Welcome to the future, where traditional alloys have been left in the past for amorphous alloys; a super light, super strong, corrosion resistant alloy that will revolutionize many of the products we use today AND will use in the future. Even crazier, this new method of forging allows amorphous metals to retain its original shape, even when forcible bent.  (Ever see the video of the crazy shape retaining foil from the Roswell, New Mexico crash?  THIS IS THE SAME SHIT! )</p>
<p><strong>What is Amorphous Metals?</strong></p>
<p><em>Wiki explains:</em></p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;An <strong>amorphous metal</strong> is a metallic material with a disordered atomic-scale structure. In contrast to most metals, which are crystalline and therefore have a highly ordered arrangement of atoms, amorphous alloys are non-crystalline. Materials in which such a disordered structure is produced directly from the liquid state during cooling are called &#8220;glasses&#8221;, and so amorphous metals are commonly referred to as &#8220;<strong>metallic glasses</strong>&#8221; or &#8220;<strong>glassy metals</strong>&#8220;.</p>
<p>&#8221; An amorphous metal is an alloy combining elements of differing atomic diameters.  The differing atomic diameters and unusual composition prevents the atoms from arranging in a regular crystalline structure (like normal metal alloys). The atoms have no easy way to slip by each other under deformation, resulting in a very hard material. &#8220;</p></blockquote>
<p>This is exciting stuff because it&#8217;s already here, and MANY labs are experimenting with it everyday.  It won&#8217;t be long before we will see this technology make it to main-stream consumer goods. DARPA explains some of the many uses for this tech:</p>
<blockquote><p>“&#8230;..achieve combinations of mechanical properties that provide revolutionary improvements compared to those of comparable conventional alloys. Amorphous-composite hybrid materials that have the stiffness of beryllium and twice the strength will be demonstrated in space applications. Bulk amorphous alloys that have strength, fatigue, and corrosion properties better than titanium will be demonstrated in turbine applications.”</p></blockquote>
<p><a href="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/glass.jpg" rel="lightbox[3671]" title="<!--:en-->Inside DARPA: 20 Advanced Technology Projects. – Pt 2 of 4<!--:-->&#8220;><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3676" src="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/glass.jpg" alt="" width="503" height="377" /></a></p>
<p><object width="500" height="375"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/-4xc3fs7rFc?version=3&#038;feature=oembed"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/-4xc3fs7rFc?version=3&#038;feature=oembed" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="500" height="375" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object></p>
<h3>Power Swim</h3>
<p><a href="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/powerswim_logo_sm.jpg" rel="lightbox[3671]" title="<!--:en-->Inside DARPA: 20 Advanced Technology Projects. – Pt 2 of 4<!--:-->&#8220;><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3678" src="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/powerswim_logo_sm.jpg" alt="" width="200" height="77" /></a></p>
<p>SAS, Navy Seals, and CAN-TF2 have all got BIG upgrades from this technology already. What&#8217;s interesting about it is its lack of pushy buttons and electric gizmos.  This human powered unit helps underwater covert soldiers reach their destination using only a fraction of the previously required energy.</p>
<p><a href="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/DARPA_PowerSwim_PM.jpg" rel="lightbox[3671]" title="<!--:en-->Inside DARPA: 20 Advanced Technology Projects. – Pt 2 of 4<!--:-->&#8220;><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3679" src="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/DARPA_PowerSwim_PM.jpg" alt="" width="463" height="398" /></a></p>
<p><em>DARPA says: </em></p>
<blockquote><p>&#8221; When used properly, the device allows swimmers to cover a given distance up to 150 percent faster than with fins, while using the same amount of energy. Much of that boost in metabolic efficiency is due to the muscle groups used. The swimmer is essentially relaxing into a slightly bent position, instead of forcing or pushing the foils through the water. This takes the emphasis off the small muscle groups used to kick, and allows larger muscle groups, such as the glutes and quads, to take over. During tests, it typically took around 2 hours for Navy SEALs to fight the urge (and years of training) to move forcefully and learn the PowerSwim&#8217;s unique motion. &#8220;</p></blockquote>
<p><a href="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/powerswim-howitworks-1107.jpg" rel="lightbox[3671]" title="<!--:en-->Inside DARPA: 20 Advanced Technology Projects. – Pt 2 of 4<!--:-->&#8220;><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3680" src="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/powerswim-howitworks-1107.jpg" alt="" width="470" height="283" /></a></p>
<p>Like I said, this bad boy is already in use today!</p>

<h3>Molecular Electronics<br />
<a href="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/moleapps-logo1.jpg" rel="lightbox[3671]" title="<!--:en-->Inside DARPA: 20 Advanced Technology Projects. – Pt 2 of 4<!--:-->&#8220;><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3682" src="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/moleapps-logo1.jpg" alt="" width="168" height="80" /></a></h3>
<p>In the future that DARPA sees, we&#8217;ll all have nano-computers inside our bodies. It will regulate everything from medicine, surgery, and bodily functions to harvesting electricity, knocking out rogue genes, and having awesome Iron Man augmented reality.</p>
<p>Moore&#8217;s Law dictated the inevitability of the penultimate size of a CPU. And right when it seemed like we were reaching that point, molecular electronics blows this theory out of the water. For the time being.  It&#8217;s all really quite insane.</p>
<blockquote><p>“Innovations in drug delivery through nanoparticles, select gene knockout, and portable sensing and testing devices&#8230; Research in harvesting excess vibration energy from nanowires, and converting this energy into electricity. “</p></blockquote>
<p>Let your imagination run wild, because this opens to door to literally a plethora of sci-fi style technologies!</p>
<p><a href="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/cbic_img5.png" rel="lightbox[3671]" title="<!--:en-->Inside DARPA: 20 Advanced Technology Projects. – Pt 2 of 4<!--:-->&#8220;><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3683" src="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/cbic_img5.png" alt="" width="530" height="286" /></a></p>

<h3>Real World Reasoning</h3>
<p><a href="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/real_sm.jpg" rel="lightbox[3671]" title="<!--:en-->Inside DARPA: 20 Advanced Technology Projects. – Pt 2 of 4<!--:-->&#8220;><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3685" src="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/real_sm.jpg" alt="" width="245" height="181" /></a></p>
<p>I would love to see how this technology evolves into the future, as this is a pretty crazy computer rendering programme. Imagine you&#8217;re a general and you wanted to run simulations on possible methods of attack in any area of the world. This DARPA lead initiative would call on the use of a highly sophisticated software engine designed to use real-world data (satellite, photo, textual..etc) and intuitively reproduce a replica of the battlefield in question. Not only will this reproduction be visual (presumably with sweet 3D glasses), but the programme goes a step further to include interior layouts, and how physical objects would interact with the surroundings / simulations.</p>
<p><em>From DARPA&#8217;s proposal:</em></p>
<blockquote><p>“Create 100 km(squared) per hour of highly realistic immersive 3-D representations of the air/land/sea mission space from ISR data for any tactical environment, generate one city block of geo-specific building interiors and exteriors , and realistically model the interaction of physical objects.”</p></blockquote>
<p>Stay tuned for the 3rd and 4th edition next week and the week after. Furthermore, by now you must love me&#8230; so you should really use the RSS thingy below and get on the ChromeDome subscription-wagon.<!--:--><!--:ru-->

		<description><![CDATA[<!--:en-->Heaven rejoice, the Holy grail of cheap, clean, and efficient power has finally been realized by the massive super-power of the far East; North Korea. A powerful nation with unlimited resources, a thriving economy, and trillions at their disposal. Oh I'm funny. . . imagine if they actually did though? Wouldn't that be actually scary?<!--:-->

<blockquote><p>&#8220;  Pyongyang, May 12 (KCNA) &#8212; Scientists of the DPRK succeeded in nuclear fusion reaction on the significant occasion of the Day of the Sun this year, according to Rodong Sinmun Wednesday. &#8220;</p></blockquote>
<p>The &#8220;Day of the Sun&#8221; they&#8217;re referring to is the birthday of the country&#8217;s founder &#8220;and eternal president&#8221;, Kim Il-Sung. Crazy. That&#8217;s a big frigging coincidence. Obviously this huge achievement is being dismissed by literally every expert in the World, and with good reason. North Korea says some pretty ridiculous things sometimes, and this is just one of those instances.</p>
<p>But let&#8217;s put our pretend caps on for a moment. What if they actually did invent a self-sustaining fusion device? What would that mean? If a rouge country invented nuclear fusion before the allies did, it could very well warp the shape of our economies. It could even lead to war. Could you imagine getting a power-bill from Kim Jong-Il ? The hilarious novelty would wear off after the first bill, I&#8217;m sure.</p>
<p><a href="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/Kim-Jong-Il-460_802195c.jpg" rel="lightbox[3623]" title="<!--:en-->Nuclear Fusion Achieved! . . .  by North Korea<!--:-->&#8220;><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3626" src="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/Kim-Jong-Il-460_802195c.jpg" alt="" width="460" height="288" /></a></p>
<h3>What is Nuclear Fusion?</h3>
<p>Basically, under fusion, a huge jolt of heat to nearly 100 million degrees Celsius would kick-start the process, fusing atomic nuclei and containing them in a charged gas called a plasma. That&#8217;s not the hard part, in fact the US has a big freaking laser that can do that shit all day long&#8230; the hard part is keeping the gas contained and at the right temperature to sustain a elongated or permanent fusion chain reaction. The best so far has been only a couple minutes.</p>
<p><object width="500" height="375"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/uOxuGzYXHSQ?version=3&#038;feature=oembed"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/uOxuGzYXHSQ?version=3&#038;feature=oembed" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="500" height="375" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object></p>
<h3>What does NK have to say about this?</h3>
<p>I&#8217;ve got their official statement here, enjoy.</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;   Pyongyang, May 12 (KCNA) &#8212; Scientists of the DPRK succeeded in nuclear fusion reaction on the significant occasion of the Day of the Sun this year, according to Rodong Sinmun Wednesday.</p>
<p>It goes on:</p>
<p>The successful nuclear fusion marks a great event that demonstrated the rapidly developing cutting-edge science and technology of the DPRK.</p>
<p>The nuclear fusion technology is called &#8220;artificial solar&#8221; technology as it represents a field of the latest science and technology for the development of new energy desired by humankind.</p>
<p>The nuclear fusion technology for obtaining safe and environment-friendly new energy the source of which is abundant draws great attention of world science at present.</p>
<p>Scientists of the DPRK have worked hard to develop nuclear fusion technology their own way.</p>
<p>They solved a great many scientific and technological problems entirely by their own efforts without the slightest hesitation and vacillation even under the conditions where everything was in short supply and there were a lot of difficulties, thus succeeding in nuclear fusion reaction at last.</p>
<p>In this course, Korean style thermo-nuclear reaction devices were designed and manufactured, basic researches into nuclear fusion reaction completed and strong scientific and technological forces built to perfect the thermo-nuclear technology by their own efforts.</p>
<p>The successful nuclear fusion in the DPRK made a definite breakthrough toward the development of new energy and opened up a new phase in the nation&#8217;s development of the latest science and technology.   &#8220;</p></blockquote>
<p><a href="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/kim-jong-il.jpg" rel="lightbox[3623]" title="<!--:en-->Nuclear Fusion Achieved! . . .  by North Korea<!--:-->&#8220;><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3627" src="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/kim-jong-il.jpg" alt="" width="227" height="298" /></a></p>
<p>They&#8217;re always good for a laugh or two. BBC ended their column on this topic with a great find in their research:</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8221; According to official biographies, when his son, the current leader Kim Jong-il was born, a new star appeared in the sky. &#8220;</p></blockquote>
<p>Ah, no freakin&#8217; way! That Kim Jong-Il guy is one cool dude.</p>

Well, as a follow up&#8230; here&#8217;s what Tom Tom has up their sleeve: Star Wars voice over. </em></p>
<p>So Tom Tom just spent a BUTT LOAD of money licensing Star Wars official voice overs, and an equal amount marketing it. Why?!</p>
<p><strong>Warning:</strong> For those who are in the know <em>- Earmuffs. </em><br />
<a href="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/06-old-school-earmuffs.jpg" rel="lightbox[3546]" title="<!--:en-->GPS Follow up: What Tom Tom is doing&#8230;<!--:-->&#8220;><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3562" src="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/06-old-school-earmuffs.jpg" alt="" width="190" height="148" /></a><br />
*******************************************</p>
<p><strong>SWEET MOTHER OF GOD! </strong> There have been Darth Vader voice overs looming around on the internet for YEARS&#8230;for FREE! <a href="http://www.brighthub.com/electronics/gps/articles/36910.aspx">Here&#8217;s one</a> I just pulled off of page one on Google with generic search terms, and it includes Austin Powers too (Australian, but not the point).</p>
<p>AM I GOING CRAZY?! Seriously TomTom, you&#8217;re hopeless. Way to spend a bajillion dollars on functionality that is already present in free-ware. Way to think out of the box and come up with a solution to sell more units. Way to redefine the market by disrupting it with revolutionary innovations. Way to cultivate the massive abundance of creativity that is clearly pouring out of the fabric that is TomTom marketing.</p>
<p>&#8220;Download now for $12.95&#8243;&#8230;. Let&#8217;s all jump on the DLC bandwagon. Let&#8217;s avoid all possible sustainable solutions for a bright, profitable future&#8230;&#8230;.annnd give them <em>this</em>.</p>
<p>TomTom, you&#8217;re doing it wrong. It&#8217;s been done. For free. For years. Compatible on your devices. Hard core fans already knew, years ago. . . You&#8217;re doomed.</p>
<p><em>Okay Earmuffs off- </em></p>
<p>Way to be, showing your stock-holders that you&#8217;ve given up. . . But I&#8217;m probably wrong. Your stock holders are clearly religious, as it takes a lot of faith to hold onto your notes. Let&#8217;s check in on your ticker since the <a href="http://www.tomtom.com/news/category.php?ID=4&amp;NID=976&amp;Language=4">press-release announcement on May 4th</a>. I&#8217;m sure your devout investors see great things happening with this campaign and emptied the rest of their pockets into TomTom shares&#8230;</p>
<p><a href="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/STARWARS.jpg" rel="lightbox[3546]" title="<!--:en-->GPS Follow up: What Tom Tom is doing&#8230;<!--:-->&#8220;><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3551" src="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/STARWARS.jpg" alt="" width="432" height="233" /></a></p>
<p>&#8230;Everything seems on the up and up here. Nothing is looking dreadfully dismal at all.<br />
&#8230;Everything looks fine. . .nothing to worry about. Just wait until everyone gets a load of your Arnold Schwarzenegger voice over campaign!</p>
<p>TomTom, you should RSS my posts. Use them as motivation.</p>

<h3>ChemBots &#8211; Chemical Robots</h3>
<p>DARPA solicited the development of  &#8220;ChemBots&#8221;; a shape-changing robot which would be able to change its shape to fit into spaces that a mono-shape robot would otherwise be unable to.</p>
<p>“<em>The ability to safely and covertly gain access to denied or hostile areas and perform useful tasks provides critical advantages over a broad spectrum of military operations,” </em>reads DARPA’s solicitation.<em> “An effective and logistically attractive means for gaining entry is to deploy an unmanned platform, such as a robot. However, the only available points of entry are small openings in buildings, walls, under doors, etc.</em>”</p>
<p>DARPA is asking robotics experts for innovative proposals to combine their own expertise with that of soft materials chemistry. Specifically, a ChemBot must be able to perform the following steps:</p>
<p>1. Travel some distance.<br />
2. Pass through an opening that is arbitrarily shaped and much smaller than the robot’s own largest dimension.<br />
3. Reconstitute its original shape, size, and functionality on the other side.<br />
4. Travel another distance.<br />

<h3>ChemComm &#8211; Chemical Communication</h3>
<p>When our lads are behind enemy lines they need to be able to send encrypted messages to their superiors. Sometimes that&#8217;s a lot easier said than done. DARPA has requested an efficient and effective way of chemically coding a 60 character message and leaving it for UAVs and other reconnaissance teams to pick up.  DARPA&#8217;s proposal illustrates the necessity for the following:</p>
<p>&#8220;<em>The ultimate goal of this program is to develop a small replicator device, with the form factor of a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) or cell phone that</em>―</p>
<p>1. Permits the user to input an arbitrary 60-character alphanumeric message.<br />
2. Translates the message into an appropriate set of modulated chemistries.<br />
3. Embeds these chemistries into a disposable substrate (the transmitter).<br />
4. Ejects the substrate for deployment.</p>
<p>&#8220;<em>The replicator device will enable warfighters to generate disposable optical transmitters in real time, each with a user-specified message. It will be compact, lightweight, and powered by batteries or solar cells.</em>&#8221;<br />
Different articles gives different speculation on what a possible substrate could be. Some say it could be a transparent spray on a wall, or a simple piece of anti-US propaganda. Basically it needs to be something that can be analyzed; either visually or electronically.</p>
<p><a href="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/al-logo-sm.jpg" rel="lightbox[3487]" title="<!--:en-->Inside DARPA: 20 Advanced Technology Projects.   &#8211; Pt 1 of 4 <!--:-->&#8220;><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3512" src="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/al-logo-sm.jpg" alt="" width="186" height="70" /></a></p>
<h3>Accelerated Learning</h3>
<p>So you just watched the &#8220;Not your basic training&#8221; commercial and you&#8217;re pumped to go to war! You drop your curly-wurly for a shiny new AR-15 Automatic assault rifle. The time it takes to go from a weak whining consumerist to a expert infantryman is long and arduous. It takes months of cognitive and physical training to become a novice, let alone an expert. DARPA wants that window of time to be as little as possible with advanced accelerated learning.  This doesn&#8217;t just apply for front line combatants, this could be for anything requiring an extended period of training. Imagine pumping out a battalion of expert snipers in a day!? Or maybe a squadron of elites like SAS.</p>
<p>I would totally take all that training to own on the paintball field. Which technically isn&#8217;t that far away. Almost all advanced military technologies are created by private companies. Since they thrive on profit, you can bet this technology will be adapted to the consumer market, eventually.</p>
<p><a href="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/Accelerate-Learning-diagram.jpg" rel="lightbox[3487]" title="<!--:en-->Inside DARPA: 20 Advanced Technology Projects.   &#8211; Pt 1 of 4 <!--:-->&#8220;><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3516" src="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/Accelerate-Learning-diagram.jpg" alt="" width="397" height="299" /></a></p>
<p>Here&#8217;s a portion of DARPA&#8217;s thoughts on this technology:</p>
<p>&#8220;<em>The Accelerated Learning program will identify the neural basis of expert performance by integration of behavioral data with neurophysiological measures to track the progression of novices on the training path to expertise. Ultimately, this research will provide the necessary foundation for how to optimize task qualities and learning environments and to accelerate the novice-to-expert progression.</em> <em>Our current work on brain-computer interfaces is guided by a vision of improved brain-machine communications that was first conveyed in the DARPA Augmented Cognition program, organized by Cmdr. Dylan Schmorrow, ONR.</em>&#8221;</p>
<p><object width="500" height="375"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/6vMO3XmNXe4?version=3&#038;feature=oembed"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/6vMO3XmNXe4?version=3&#038;feature=oembed" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="500" height="375" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object></p>
<p><a href="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/polyice.jpg" rel="lightbox[3487]" title="<!--:en-->Inside DARPA: 20 Advanced Technology Projects.   &#8211; Pt 1 of 4 <!--:-->&#8220;><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3513" src="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/polyice.jpg" alt="" width="110" height="107" /></a></p>
<h3>Polymer Ice</h3>
<p>The US is geographically strange. The north gets a lot of snow in the winter, and the south doesn&#8217;t&#8230;usually.  But when the south does get snow and you&#8217;re lucky enough to catch the news poking fun at southern Americans&#8230; you will see Texan&#8217;s all-over-the-road. It&#8217;s hilarious. They haven&#8217;t the foggiest when it comes to driving in slippery conditions. Then the news interviews a Yankee from New York, and everyone laughs again.  ANYWAYS, the same would probably hold true in the deserts of the Middle East. I am sure insurgents would have one hell of a time trying to drive with a fraction of the friction they&#8217;re used to. As such, DARPA is making an effort to bring synthetic ice technology &#8211; designed for hot climates -  to the fore-front of the fight against terror.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s a section of DARPAs proposal:</p>
<p>&#8221; <em>To develop Polymer Ice, a polymer-based artificial ice material that achieves effective mobility control by the precise and reversible reduction of ground traction. The Polymer Ice program aims to replicate the properties of black ice, a thin, translucent, slippery coating of ice on roadway surfaces that forms spontaneously in cold temperatures, but for use in a broad range of hot, arid environments such as found in Iraq and Afghanistan. A non-toxic reversal agent, carefully matched to the chemical characteristics of Polymer Ice, will be developed to rapidly restore traction when applied to a Polymer Ice-coated surface. Most importantly, incorporation of the reversal agent into combat boots and tires, to achieve instantaneous traction restoration on contact, will provide true asymmetric mobility capabilities to our war fighters. This is akin to having the ability to run effortlessly on wet ice, while adversary mobility is simultaneously severely restricted.</em>&#8221;</p>
<p><a href="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/programmablematter.jpg" rel="lightbox[3487]" title="<!--:en-->Inside DARPA: 20 Advanced Technology Projects.   &#8211; Pt 1 of 4 <!--:-->&#8220;><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3514" src="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/programmablematter.jpg" alt="" width="170" height="65" /></a></p>
<h3>Programmable Matter</h3>
<p>&#8220;T1000 is made of a mimetic poly-alloy&#8221; &#8211; Yeah, that&#8217;s right. T1000 people. Well, really the T1000 would be a mix of this project and the chembot project&#8230; but its convergence is inevitable.  Programmable matter is the science of telling tiny particles what to do, and how to do it in order to construct something out of virtually nothing. Could you imagine telling your &#8220;iReplicator&#8221; in the future to conjure up a robotic David Hasselhof out of thin air? Pretty sure a Hof without a drinking issue would be the ultimate weapon against humanity.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s what DARPA&#8217;s proposal has to say:</p>
<p>&#8221; <em>Programmable Matter represents the convergence of chemistry, information theory, and control into a new materials design paradigm referred to as &#8220;InfoChemistry&#8221;—building information directly into materials. To achieve the Programmable Matter vision, key technological breakthroughs will center on the following critical areas:</em></p>
<p>1. Encoding information into chemistry, or fusing materials with machines.<br />
2. Fabrication of mesoscale particles with arbitrary complex shapes, composition, and function.<br />
3. Interlocking/adhesion mechanisms that are strong and reversible.<br />
4. Global assembly strategies that translate information into action.<br />
5. Mathematical theory for construction of 3D objects from particles.</p>
<p><em>Of critical importance are radical new material architectures that maximize the efficiency of information processing/transfer, and design rules for the optimal number, size, and shape of particles required to create objects of a specific size and spatial feature resolution. &#8220;</em></p>
<p><em><br />

		<description><![CDATA[Snipers are hidden heroes on the front of chaos. They are deadly accurate from over a kilometer (or two) away which spawns super-human rumours; spreading cautious fear throughout the sects of the enemy. Highlighted today is a British Sniper who achieved marksman fame with - not one - but two kills at over 2.4 kms away.

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>You may not know, but I am an amazing sniper myself. Ask anyone I know and they&#8217;ll tell you that I am a &#8216;one shot, one kill master&#8217;.  Seriously, it doesn&#8217;t matter if it&#8217;s Halo3, Modern Warfare 2, Battlefield or any first person shooter, I am a  cold-as-ice killer of epic proportions.</p>
<p>Oh, we&#8217;re talking about real life? . . . I&#8217;ve shot my uncles rifle once or twice, and I&#8217;m pretty sure that tree (from 30 feet away)  didn&#8217;t see it coming.</p>
<p>&#8230;I digress.</p>
<h3>Meet British Sniper Craig Harrison</h3>
<p><a href="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/018_harrison-300x300.jpg" rel="lightbox[3426]" title="British Sniper: The new long-shot record holder..."><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3432" src="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/018_harrison-300x300.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="300" /></a></p>
<p>It&#8217;s a good thing Craig Harrison is on our side, as this British sniper recently shot two insurgents from over 2.47 kms away for a new &#8220;in-battle&#8221; sniper record. The previous record has been standing since 2002; a 2.43 km shot made by Canadian Army Cpl. Rob Furlong (presumably with a much shittier gun than Harrison).</p>
<p>Harrison recounts: &#8211; &#8220;The first round hit a machine-gunner in the stomach and killed him outright, the second insurgent grabbed the weapon and turned as my second shot hit him in the side. He went down, too,&#8221; Harrison told the Sunday Times of London.</p>
<div>
<p>Sniping experts proclaim that this is as good as modern sniping gets.</p>
<p>&#8220;When you are shooting that far, if you miss by a hair, you miss by a mile,&#8221; said John Plaster, a retired US Army sharp-shooting instructor and author of &#8220;The Ultimate Sniper&#8221;. &#8220;That is about as precise as any marksmen on the planet could shoot. At a distance like that they cannot even see anyone and they would not even hear the muzzle report,&#8221; Plaster said.</p>
</div>
<p>Harrison said that weather helped him a great deal, as there was no wind and great visibility. Unfortunately, in the final days of his campaign he suffered a minor gunshot wound and broken arms when his vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb ambush.</p>
<p><a href="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/1259749147.jpg" rel="lightbox[3426]" title="British Sniper: The new long-shot record holder..."><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3434" src="http://nation.towergaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/1259749147.jpg" alt="" width="480" height="600" /></a></p>
<h3>The weapon used?</h3>
<p>The Accuracy International L115A3 long-range rifle. It&#8217;s bad ass! The British Army says this about the weapon:</p>
<p>&#8220;British snipers fulfill a vital and enduring role on the battlefield, in terms of intelligence-gathering, target identification and eliminating high-value targets.</p>
<p>The L115A3 rifle, part of the Sniper System Improvement Programme (SSIP), is a large-calibre weapon which provides state-of-the-art telescopic day and night all-weather sights, increasing a sniper&#8217;s effective range considerably. The first batch of SSIPs were deployed to Afghanistan in May 2008. Designed to achieve a first-round hit at 600 metres and harassing fire out to 1,100 metres, Accuracy International&#8217;s L96 sniper rifle has also been upgraded with a new x3-x12 x 50 sight and spotting scope. The L115A3 long range rifle fires an 8.59mm bullet which is heavier than the 7.62mm round of the L96 and less likely to be deflected over extremely long ranges. Other elements of the Sniper System Improvement Programme include night sights, spotting scopes, laser range finders and tripods.&#8221;</p>

<p>The bullets are literally the length of a beer bottle, and the damage they inflict is described as &#8220;destructive&#8221;.  You gotta be thankful to be where you are, and not part of this whole shemozzle in the middle east.</p>

Remember the awesome G4 iMac from 2001? So cool right? So cool, in fact, that you bought it to the tune of €1200. It was awesome, non? Your friends came over and drooled, and you sat there in the lime light loving every moment of it. I mean, look at it&#8230;the screen is on a sprung swivel! Clearly this was the pinnacle of technological design.  Well great job ignoramus, you could have been cruising around in a new BMW coupe for that money. Who&#8217;s a cool kid now? Nerd.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s true, if you would&#8217;ve resisted the awesome space-aged design of the G4 iMac and put the same cash into Apple shares&#8230; you&#8217;d have a lot of cash right now. Yes, a lot of cash without those awesome pod speakers.</p>
<h3><strong>Maths time:</strong></h3>
<p>G4 iMac price:  €1200 (about $1550 usd)<br />
APPL stock in 2001 (Jan 8): $8.19usd<br />
APPL stock in 2010 (May4): $261 usd<br />
You could have earned: $49,395.60 usd  or about €40,000</p>
