I love solo acoustic acts. My first coffee house was at the age of 14 and I haven’t stopped playing and watching them for over 15 years now. One of my favourite things to hear is an original piece or cover of something funny. Yeah it’s great to hear people with amazing voices or other musical talent, but there is something to be said about the person who gets up there and gets the bar laughing. Several times these acts are based on covers inspired by other comedic musicians. Here are some of my favorite comedians who rock the acoustic guitar. I highly suggest you check out other comedy and music from these artists.

Demetri Martin

Demetri uses a quieter approach to his humour which everyone may not get. It’s extremely subtle yet clever, but I can see how a lot of his jokes could perceived as too much of a stretch to get a laugh. Luckily for me I am not over critical and thus laugh at most jokes, leading a happy life and leaving “complaining about things” to whatever girlfriend I may have at the time. Should she complain too much and prove absolutely annoying, Demetri has given me an excellent means of escape:

http://ca.askmen.com/video/celebs/590-demetri-martin-video-amazing-breakup-lines.html

Stephen Lynch

From religion to relationships, Stephen has no boundaries on what he’ll joke about with his politically incorrect edge. His offensiveness is funny to me, but not over the top to a “shock value” level. It’s a little rude, but intelligent and oh yeah, he’s an fantastic guitar player which is easy on the ears as he accompanies his jestful ways. Here is his song “Lullaby” performed live:

Some other Lynch: “Special Olympics“, “Gerbil Song“.

Jon Lajoie

About 3 years ago a friend linked me one of Lajoie’s songs “Everyday Normal Guy”, and I was instantly hooked. His videos have great production value for a less than working class budget, and the content relating to day to day life in most of his music is hilarious. He’s since exploded on YoutTube and become much more popular, however here is one of my original favorites from him… about 15 seconds long.

Some other fav’s: “High as F#%k”, “Song for Britney”, “Too Fast”, “2 Girls 1 Cup Song”.

You can also catch Jon in the online web-based series “The League” – a funny show about a few guys who run a fantasy football league taken a little too seriously.

Rob Paravonian

An indie music/comedy warrior, Rob is best known for his “Pachelbel Rant” on YouTube in which he identifies a ton of similar sounding pop songs.

Other Paravonian: “Friends and Sugar Ray“, “Pushing Band Candy“, “American Idol Loser Song“.

Rob puts on a very funny live show, communicating with the audience a lot. His material is a little less offensive and more on the silly side of comedy. He is still touring and writing songs, but what really caught my attention was the mini-series he hosts “Life as a Comic” – an entertaining and an honest depiction of real life on the road as an unsigned emerging artist. Here’s an episode:

After 12 Long Years, Soundgarden Returns!

The band broke up in 1997 due to growing tensions while on tour. It is now 2010, and Soundgarden will be reuniting and joining the resurgence of grunge bands. Matt Cameron has been playing as Pearl Jam’s drummer since leaving Soundgarden, while front-man Chris Cornell focused on his solo career. Lead guitarist Kim Thayil joined up with many different artists, as did bassist Ben Shepherd. Both Shepherd and Thayil attempted to start their own bands, but neither saw much success.

After years of fans pleading for a reunion, it is finally coming to fruition. The band will be welcomed by fans all over the world and they are already planning on releasing songs that have at this point never been officially released. Fans can also expect some new material from the band as most of the members should have plenty of time on hand, save for Matt Cameron who is technically still a part of Pearl Jam. Pearl Jam has a tour planned for 2010, so it is still unknown when Soundgarden will make their long awaited return.

Soundgarden will join the likes of grunge bands Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains and Stone Temple Pilots, who are still touring and releasing albums. Grunge seemed to fade away in the late 90′s, but is slowly returning to its glorious days of old. A new generation now has the chance to follow one of the greatest grunge bands that ruled the music world in the 90′s.

Old fans and new will get to experience the power and depth of one of the greatest bands in existence. The Music World is a much better place when Soundgarden is still playing. Spring is quickly approaching, so keep your ears open for Soundgarden’s long awaited return.
